Family-Friendly Accommodations on Fairy-Tale-Like Grounds
In the early 1900s, Vermont governor Allen Miller Fletcher staked out a hill in the Green Mountains to build a castle-like resort. The area he picked is almost fairy-tale-like—tucked into the woods like something Hansel and Gretel might have stumbled upon. It’s called Castle Hill, and it’s where you’ll find The Pointe Hotel, a modern hotel that shares its property with some of Fletcher’s original Cotswolds-style buildings and gorgeous gardens. The brick-accented Pointe Hotel is family friendly and comfortable, and their facilities put the focus on fitness and wellness. There’s an Aveda Concept spa onsite where you can get massages, facials, and body wraps. Feel free to take yoga and Pilates classes in a sunlit pavilion lined with glass windows on the walls and ceiling. Parents can let kids loose on an arcade or the tennis courts, and there’s a pool area.
Breakfast and dinner are served onsite in the opulent wood-paneled dining room; executive chef Alphonsus Harris employs fresh local produce to craft his French-influenced prix fixe menu items.
Proctorsville, Vermont: Quaint New England Town near Okemo Mountain
Proctorsville is set in the pastoral countryside outside of Ludlow, Vermont, and it’s surrounded by the Green Mountains. The area is popular for the skiing at Okemo Mountain in the winter, but the scenery leaves you plenty to do throughout the year.
It’s worth it to walk or hike through the picturesque fields, hills, and covered bridges in the area. Come spring, Okemo Mountain Resort's trails open up. They lead to Bridal Veil Falls (also known as Buttermilk Falls), a series of three waterfalls open for swimming and Waterworld-themed marriage ceremonies.
Towns in the Green Mountains are tiny and spread out, but the communities are tightly knit. Throughout the summer, Ludlow hosts live jazz, blues, classical, and rock concerts outdoors during the week. There’s also an appreciation for locally made products—you can check out works by local artisans at craft fairs throughout the state and grab a bottle of Vermont maple syrup at Ludlow's general stores.
