The Manhattan Transfer
The Manhattan Transfer performing “Sassy” in 2009
Forty years is a long time for a group to keep performing the way they did when they hit it big—fortunately for The Manhattan Transfer, they don't have to. The vocal quartet's four-decade run has seen them endlessly experiment in genres and styles, dabbling in jazz, pop, R&B, and doo-wop. Active in its current form since 1972, albeit with the swapping in of Cheryl Bentyne in 1978 and plenty of haircuts since then, the band has released 23 albums and garnered 10 Grammy Awards, including one for their 1980 Weather Report cover, "Birdland." Their most recent endeavor, 2009's The Chick Corea Songbook, has earned plenty of praise; Jazz Times, described it as “less an album than a series of soul-stirring journeys.”
As one of what are being dubbed the “Living Room Sessions,” this performance is an intimate acoustic set, featuring only the four singers and a single piano. Alongside explorations of their standbys, which could include Nat King Cole's “Route 66” and Louis Jordan's "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie," the venerable musicians share anecdotes from their career, such as thoughts on songwriting and constantly being chased by locomotives.
