Groupon: Bed and Breakfast on Lake Garfield
Lakeside Terrace overlooks pristine Lake Garfield in the heart of the Berkshires, and there’s no shortage of ways to kick back and relax amid this scenery. You can spend the day swimming, boating, or fishing for bass, perch, and pickerel. There’s a screened-in wraparound porch where you can get expansive views of the lake, and there are lawn chairs and hammocks throughout the property.
Constructed in 1875 as a guesthouse, the property features seven individually appointed rooms. Done up in cornflower blue, room three occupies a corner of the house and features views of both the lake and the surrounding forest. One of the brightest spots in the house is room two, where natural light pours in from large windows overlooking the water. Five of the rooms have private bathrooms with showers; rooms six and seven share a bathroom. Each morning, enjoy a continental breakfast of baked goods, fruit, hard-boiled eggs, and coffee.
Monterey, Massachusetts: Cultural Attractions and Mountain Hiking amid the Berkshires
Located in western Massachusetts, the tiny town of Monterey sits at the headwaters of the Konkapot River, which begins at Lake Garfield. Monterey is one of many towns that make up the Berkshires, a beautiful highlands region famous for its arts scene and river valleys. Since the 19th century, artists and writers from Herman Melville to Edith Wharton have found solace and inspiration here while writing their most famous works and filling out typewriter rebate forms.
The region's arts-centric tradition continues today at a number of repertory theaters and world-class museums, including the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge and Herman Melville’s Arrowhead in Pittsfield. Outdoorsy types can keep pretty busy in the Berkshires: the geography is made up of mountains, forests, and valleys, as well as a portion of the Appalachian Trail.
