The Scouting Report
For Seattle Sounders FC’s head coach Sigi Schmidt, the expectations are always high—but that’s just because it seems as though he never fails to deliver. A two-time MLS Coach of the Year, Sigi has packed more success into the Sounders’ first four years than some sports franchises experience in their entire history. These accomplishments include reaching the postseason four times in a row—a feat achieved by only one other MLS expansion team—and becoming the first team in 42 years to win three consecutive U.S. Open Cup Championships. This year, Sigi helms another squad of title contenders, led by top scorer Eddie Johnson, a three-time MLS All-Star with U.S. National Team experience who has already netted eight goals in 2013 after setting a club record with 14 in 2012.
Seattle Sounders FC
Expansion teams often experience growing pains, spinning their wheels before building the talent and fan support needed to claw their way out of their league’s basement. Apparently, no one shared this narrative with the Seattle Sounders. Upon entering the MLS in 2009, the Sounders wasted no time establishing themselves as one of the League’s most dominant programs, reaching the playoffs four years in a row and seizing three straight U.S. Open Cups, all without hiring aliens to steal Pele’s life force. The Sounders have also accomplished the impressive feat of selling out every single home game at CenturyLink Field since the team’s inception.
CenturyLink Field
Consistently breaking records for soccer attendance, CenturyLink Field boasts one of the nation's premier pitches. Originally designed to hold intimate soccer crowds capped at around 30,000 seats, the club has answered the demand of the city's ravening fans by opening more and more of the stadium. Most recently the field hosted a record-breaking 66,452 attendees at a game against Portland. Art installations decorating the stadium range from 24-foot steel discs rising up the North Tower to the primordial landscapes of James Lavadour's Standing Among Ghosts, which takes its name from a speech by Chief Seattle about how incredibly haunted the city is.
